Get outside … even on the hard days!

Training for any athletic endeavor has its ups and downs.  Some days you feel energetic and on top of the world, and some days take all you have to find the motivation to get going.  That’s where I found myself this past Saturday.  Don’t get me wrong.  By all accounts Saturday was a perfectly lovely day.  But, since childhood I have suffered from migraine headaches.  So, when the pounding in my head woke me up, instead of the sun peeking through my window, I knew it was going to be a rough day.

My boyfriend and running coach Charly Loera and I had a great day of skiing on Mt. Hood planned, so a migraine headache was such disappointing news.  I took my migraine medicine, laid down, and hoped for the best.  But, it became clear pretty quickly that this was not going to be one of those days where I could take my medication and be on my merry way.  I took a second dose of my medication a little later and had to face reality:  I could spend the day in bed, or I could suck it up and gut it out on the mountain.

So, I did what anyone in that situation would do — I borrowed my daughter’s extra dark riding glasses and we headed to the mountain.  It wasn’t my best day of cross-country skiing, but it was far better than a day on the couch!

Sunday I was still a little wobbly, but feeling a lot more feisty!  With spring weather gracing us in the Pacific Northwest it was a fabulous day to hit the trail.  First day in the saddle for the season, and what a beautiful day it was.  We rode the Spring Water Corridor with our friends Travis and Bree.  Travis and Charly ride a faster pace than Bree and I, so we split up and made plans to meet at the 2 hour mark.  Bree and I made it back with just enough time to take a few silly pics, because, why not?
